HARRIS LEADS BIDEN IN PREDICTIT BETTING MARKETS

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is now more likely than President Joe Biden to win the November presidential election, according to prices on the PredictIt politics betting website.

Contracts that Harris will win the election are selling at 24 cents with a potential $1 payoff. Contracts that Biden will win have sunk to 14 cents, down from almost 50 cents before last week's presidential debate, when his fumbling and sometimes-incoherent performance against Republican rival Donald Trump set off a wave of panic within the Democratic party.

Contracts that Trump will win have climbed to 59 cents.

While Biden has resisted calls from inside his party to step aside, Harris is viewed as the top alternative to replace him if he decides to fold his reelection campaign.

PredictIt's market for who will win the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination show Harris with an even greater lead, at 48 cents versus Biden at 30 cents. California Gov. Gavin Newsom is third at 13 cents.

A nonprofit research project based in New Zealand, PredictIt is operated by Victoria University of Wellington, which shares data from the website with other universities to help study topics including microeconomics and game theory.
