U.S. President Joe Biden must drop his re-election bid or Donald Trump is sure to return to the White House, former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi said on Wednesday.

OECD releases June composite leading indicator data (1000 GMT).


COMPANIES


LEONARDO LDOF.MI

Italian defence group and German peer Rheinmetall RHMG.DE have agreed to form a joint venture to produce tanks and other land defence systems, the two companies said on Wednesday.

The lender is in talks with its partners in the custody business - Societe Generale in Italy and Caceis (Credit Agricole-Santander) in Germany - for a review of contracts, and with other providers such as BNP Paribas Securities Services, daily Milano Finanza reported on Thursday quoting Bloomberg. It added that the internalisation of activities was also an option.


BANCA MONTE DEI PASCHI BMPS.MI

Italy is looking for a merger deal to further cut its stake in the bailed-out lender, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Wednesday.

(*) The third tranche of the stake sale could target between 10% to 16% of the bank's share capital and could take place in the autumn or winter, daily Il Messaggero reported on Thursday.

The daily added that the main suitor would be UniCredit and that the Treasury held talks in early February with CEO Andrea Orcel that failed over a difference of 2.5 billion euros.

Italy's top flight soccer league will have a new logo to mark the start of the sponsorship by Enilive, the chief executive of the energy group biofuel unit and Serie A said late on Wednesday.


BORSA ITALIANA

Italy's government will monitor commitments made by Euronext ENX.PA when it acquired the Milan bourse, Industry Minister Adolfo Urso said on Wednesday after meeting unions who staged a historic strike at the stock exchange.


M&A, ITA AIRWAYS

Lufthansa LHAG.DE won EU antitrust approval to buy 41% of ITA Airways for 325 million euros on Wednesday after ceding routes and slots, with the news boosting rival IAG's shares and hopes for its takeover of Air Europa.

(*) Lufthansa will consider raising its stake in Italy's ITA Airways to 90% starting from early next year, the CEO of the German airline said in an interview with Corriere della Sera published on Thursday. La Repubblica and La Stampa, meanwhile, reported that Joerg Eberhart, Lufthansa's head of strategy and former boss of Air Dolomiti, would be ITA's new CEO.
