POLITICS

China's top trade official will arrive in Italy next week for talks, an Italian government source said on Wednesday, as Beijing seeks to persuade European Union members to reject proposed EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs).


ECONOMY

Italy will not present its new budget plan until next month, missing the European Union's September deadline, because parliament wants the Treasury to factor in upcoming revisions to economic growth data for 1995-2023, a minister said on Wednesday.

Treasury sells BTP bonds. Subscriptions close at 0900 GMT.


COMPANIES

UNICREDIT CRDI.MI

UniCredit's CEO approached Commerzbank about exploring merger talks on Wednesday, a source with knowledge of the matter said, after Italy's second-largest bank bought a 9% stake in the German lender and signalled it was open to buying more.

Given Unicredit's move on Commerzbank, Unipol is now considering buying a shareholding into Monte dei Paschi when the government is expected to sell a stake of between 8% and 10% in order to cut its ownership in the Tuscan bank to below 20%, Il Messaggero reported on Thursday. However, Unipol Chairman Carlo Cimbri will not make the first move but will wait to be asked to do so by the Economic Ministry, the report added, referring to conversations between Cimbri and advisors.

Banking foundation Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, the bank's single largest shareholder, is in favour of confirming CEO Carlo Messina when his mandate is up next year, "given his exceptional results", the head of the banking foundation, Marco Gilli, told La Stampa in an interview published on Thursday.

The Italian aerospace firm on Wednesday posted an order backlog of 1.386 million euros ($1.53 million) at the end of H1 and confirmed its full year results guidance.


STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

The carmaker said on Wednesday it was investing more than $406 million in three facilities in Michigan to execute its multi-energy strategy.

(*) The group told U.S dealers that August sales were up 21% with respect to July and that dealer inventory was reduced for two consecutive months by about 10% in total.
