COMPANIES

UNICREDIT CRDI.MI

A German bank staff union on Thursday called on Berlin to prevent Italy's second-largest bank from buying Commerzbank, warning of massive job losses if the deal goes through.

For decades, Andrea Orcel was the 'rainmaker' who CEOs turned to for advice on the big deals that reshaped the banking landscape. Now, as UniCredit chief executive, the Italian has set himself his biggest test so far -- breaking down Europe's deeply entrenched political resistance to cross-border mergers.

(*) Orcel met Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti on Wednesday to discuss the acquisition of the Commerzbank stake and the minister expressed appreciation about the move, Il Messaggero reported on Friday. It added that, apart from a message sent to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni just before the formal announcement of the move, the Italian government had not been involved.

(*) Il Messaggero also reported that Unicredit held a board meeting on Wednesday during which Orcel briefed board members about the move.

INTESA SANPAOLO ISP.MI

The lender is planning to offer to up to 3,000 of its workers the option to retire early, union sources said on Thursday, after a meeting where they discussed the incentive scheme with representatives from Italy's biggest bank.

BANCA MEDIOLANUM BMED.MI

The European Central Bank was wrong to block Italy's former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi from keeping a 30% stake in the Italian asset manager after a tax fraud conviction, the European Union Court of Justice ruled on Thursday.

(*) DOVALUE DOVA.MI

The bad loan manager said on Thursday its Greek subsidiary was awarded a new mandate for the servicing of the majority of a portfolio - with a gross book value of 1 billion euros and 3 billion euros of total claims - sold by several Greek credit institutions under special liquidation. The deal is the first of the three tranches of a so-called "Project Alphabet", the group said in a statement.

LOTTOMATICA LTMC.MI

(*) Shareholder Gamma Intermediate completed the sale of a 6% stake in the group at a price of 11.10 euros per share ($12.39) through an accelerated bookbuilding launched late on Thursday, the Italian betting firm said on Friday.
