Adds context

LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters) -Neil Hitchinson, a veteran trader on the North Sea crude trading desk at Gunvor Group, has left the company, three trading sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Swiss trading house Gunvor hired Hitchinson from rival Mercuria in 2016 to expand its North Sea oil trading. Hitchinson has been with Gunvor since then, apart from a 1-year stint at Sahara Energy.

It was not immediately clear why he left. A spokesperson for Gunvor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gunvor was one of two traders that bought up nine North Sea cargoes of grades that underpin the international Brent benchmark, which helped drive a price spike in June.
