STOXX TICKS HIGHER ON SURGING AUTOS

The STOXX 600 .STOXX is up 0.4%, buoyed by auto stocks .SXAP, up 1.3%, while utilities .SX6P are a drag, down 0.3%.

Weighing on the latter is Spanish renewables company Iberdrola .IBE.MC, off 3.5% and biggest faller of the STOXX.

Autos are being helped out by German auto parts and tires maker Continental CONG.DE, up around 11% to a three-week high, following encouraging pre-close comments on the company's auto unit.

British medical equipment maker Smith & Nephew SN.L is at the top of the FTSE 100 .FTSE, up nearly 7% after activist investor Cevian Capital disclosed a 5% stake.
