Sept 23 (Reuters) -About 5,000 Textron TXT.N workers went on strike at the business jet maker's Wichita campus, a union representing the members said on Monday.

Over the weekend, members represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers voted to reject a four-year contract offer from Textron Aviation.

Textron had offered a 26% general wage hike over the life of the contract to the workers represented by the union, alongside a annual lump sum of $3,000 and other benefits.

Textron's aviation unit, which is the company's most profitable business, said on its website the strike affects its service center and components manufacturing facility locations in Wichita.

The company added it was prepared to maintain operations and provide continued service and support for customers.

Textron employs over 35,000 people worldwide, according to its website.
