THE GRASS IS GREENER TODAY IN EUROPE

As expected, the stock market has got off to a strong start, with Milan's FTSE MIB .FTMIB and Paris' CAC 40 .FCHI leading the charge higher in Europe, up around 1.1% and 0.8% respectively.

The STOXX 600, meanwhile, is up 0.4%, with hefty gains in the likes of German defence group Rheinmetall RHMG.DE, which is up 3.7% after a Handelsblatt report that Italy was planning to buy hundreds of the company's tanks.

Nuclear power company Drax DRX.L is up 4%, almost at the top of the STOXX, after a Barclays upgrade. GSK GSK.L is down around 0.1% after buying the full rights to COVID and influenza vaccines from German biotech CureVac 5CV.DE, whose shares are up a whopping 21% on the day.

Over in France, shares in Eurofins EUFI.PA are among the top gainers, rising 2.9%, after saying it further refuted allegations made in late June by short-seller Muddy Waters, which questioned the lab testing company's financial reporting. At the time, Eurofins stock dropped as much as 25% on the day, before retracing some of those losses.

An upbeat note overnight from analysts at Macquarie offering a positive outlook for output across Rio Tinto's ops - except Canada - has helped lift the miner's London-listed shares, echoing the gains in Sydney and given the broader basic resources sector a push higher .FTNMX551020 as well.

Next up today is a flurry of final PMI data out of various European economies.

In the meantime, here's a look at what's happening on Europe's stock markets:
