THE UNBEARABLE WRONG-NESS OF FED WATCHING

Oh dear. Ahead of the Fed, markets are predicting things. A jumbo 50 basis point rate cut. More rate cuts. Perhaps a recession.

If asset manager Columbia Threadneedle’s scorecard here is at least as useful as the historical data Fed watchers present as guides to the future, look away from markets now.

Futures are pointing to a 50-bp cut, while most economists polled by Reuters see 25 bps as a far more likely outcome.

When it comes to predicting the world’s largest economy and monetary policy, the markets are most likely wrong.
