TOO EARLY TO EXPECT AN "AHA" MOMENT FOR AI IN DRUG DEVELOPMENT, SAYS LEERINK PARTNERS

The use-cases for artificial intelligence on the clinical development side remain early, although there is clear evidence of its use on the administrative side of healthcare, brokerage Leerink Partners said on Wednesday.

Although AI is finding its way into numerous pockets, it may be too early to expect an "aha" moment, Leerink analysts said, adding AI maybe more of an "enabling agent than a specific revenue driver."

Whether what companies are promising to do is likely exaggerated or what generative AI promises to achieve were by far the over-arching theme at a conference held in Las Vegas this week.

Drugmakers have been experimenting with artificial intelligence for years and have more recently used it to find patients for clinical trials quickly, or to reduce the number of people needed to test medicines, which not only accelerates the development process but also potentially saves dollars.

NVIDIA NVDA.O, the AI darling, noted that the various efforts around the use of medical devices utilization, clinical trial matching, and digital health applications were still early in process.

Leerink says rolling out more digital-health apps is feasible, as virtual care becomes more broadly ingrained within the traditional care setting.
