WHAT'S UP WITH TESLA?

At the beginning of last week, no one would have bet on a +34% rally in Tesla TSLA.O over just 7 sessions, but here we are.

Positive surprises in deliveries have helped. But there might be more to the rally, which has dusted off part of the gloom stemming from concerns over fierce Chinese competition.

Some investors are starting to realise a possible narrative shift, which would see Tesla becoming the next big bet in artificial intelligence and robotics.

A note last week by a team of Morgan Stanley analysts led by Adam Jonas nicely described what the future could look like for the maker of the Optimus humanoid robot, first unveiled in 2022.

"AI is driving transformational change in robotics. We believe the humanoids opportunity is far bigger and faster adopting than autonomous cars and will see a greater quantum of capital behind it," they wrote.

"Tesla is at the epicenter of the theme. Investors may need to add new tabs to their excel models."

Here are some numbers.

The U.S. bank forecasts a humanoid population reaching 8 million units in the United States by 2040 and growing to 63 million with a $3 trillion wage impact by 2050.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been even more bullish.

At his latest AGM, Musk said humanoids will eventually outnumber humans by two-to-one or more with Tesla producing over 100 million Optimus a year, MS recalls.
