Adds comparative data, comments from statement

PARIS, Sept 20 (Reuters) -Grain trade association Coceral on Friday cut its estimate for this year's grain crop in the European Union and Britain to 280.3 million tons from 296 million projected in June and down nearly 5% on 2023 after adverse weather throughout the region.

The sharpest fall from last year was in soft wheat, now seen shedding 10% from last year after the lobby cut its estimates for production in EU and Britain to 126 million metric tons against 134.5 million tons projected in June.

Coceral also cut its estimate of the 2024 barley production in the EU and Britain to 57.6 million tons from 59.9 million but this was still above the 54.8 tons harvested last year.

"Rain and a lack of sunshine during the spring have significantly impacted winter crop production in western Europe, most of all France and Germany," Coceral said in a statement.

"This has added to lower plantings, which had resulted from overly wet conditions during the fall of 2023. Hot and dry weather during pollination have affected spring crop yields in southeastern Europe," it added.

Adverse weather since last autumn in the bloc prompted observers to regularly cut their crop estimates.

Coceral cut its forecast for the ongoing maize (corn) harvest to 60.3 million tons from 64.8 million.

In oilseeds, Coceral lowered its EU plus Britain crop forecast to 18.1 million tons from 19.4 million in June.
