BELGRADE, Oct 16 (Reuters) -Serbia and a U.S.-South Korean consortium comprising UTG Renewables and Hyundai Engineering & Technology have signed a deal to build six solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts, a statement from the energy and mining ministry said.

Serbian energy and mining minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic and the CEO of state-run power utility EPS Dusan Zivkovic signed the agreement on the Serbian side, the statement said.

The solar plants will have battery storage with a total capacity of 200 MW, the ministry said in the statement.

Serbia, a candidate to join the European Union, produces two-thirds of its electricity in ailing coal power plants and is seeking to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its energy mix to cut down its carbon footprint.
