European defence stocks rally as Trump claims victory
MILAN, Nov 6 (Reuters) -European defence stocks were among the top gainers on Wednesday after Republican Donald Trump claimed victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential contest.
An index of the region's aerospace and defence companies .SXPARO soared 3.3% to a fresh record high by 0835 GMT.
Trump back in the White House is seen as bullish for European defence stocks, given his warnings to scale back U.S. military support in the region and force NATO members to spend 2% or more of their GDP on defence.
Top gainers on the index were Germany's Hensoldt HAGG.DE, Rolls-Royce RR.L and BAE Systems BAES.L in the UK, Italy's Leonardo LDOF.MI and Sweden's SAAB SAABb.ST. Their shares rose between 2.7 and 8%.
